Garden Design

What's included

  • Custom planting plans
  • Perennial & annual gardens
  • Native plant specialization
  • Raised bed gardens

A good garden looks like it belongs to the house and the people who live there. We start by learning how you use your outdoor space, how much sun and shade it gets, and the style you're drawn to. Then we design a planting plan that fits, whether that's a cottage-style perennial border, a clean modern planting, or a few beautifully filled containers at the front door.

Planting plans made for Chicago

Cold winters, hot summers, and heavy clay soil narrow the list of plants that truly thrive here. Each plan accounts for light, soil, drainage, and the mature size of every plant, so the garden fills in the way it was drawn instead of outgrowing its space after a few seasons.

Native plants

Native perennials and grasses such as purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan, little bluestem, and prairie dropseed are adapted to the region. They support bees and butterflies and need less watering once established. We can build an entire garden around natives or work them into a more traditional design.

Perennials, annuals, and raised beds

Perennials give a garden structure that returns every year, while annuals add bold color that changes with the season. For vegetables and herbs, raised beds warm up earlier in spring, drain well, and keep heavy clay out of the picture.

Seasonal containers and planters

Container plantings are a big part of our work: stone bowls, urns, window boxes, railing planters, and hanging baskets designed for spring, summer, fall, and the holidays. They bring a garden to places with no garden at all, like a stoop, a balcony, or a storefront.

Common Questions

Have a question we didn't cover? Call us at (773) 456-1537.

Do you design gardens for small city yards?

Yes. Many of our projects are in city neighborhoods like Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, and Lakeview, where space is tight. Containers, window boxes, and compact planting plans can make a small yard, balcony, or front entrance feel full and finished.

Can you include native plants?

Yes. Native plant specialization is part of our garden design service. We can make natives the focus of the garden or mix them with traditional ornamentals.

Do you change containers with the seasons?

Yes. We design container plantings for spring, summer, fall, and the holidays, and can refresh them as the seasons change.
