Tree & Shrub Care

What's included

  • Professional pruning
  • Health assessments
  • Disease treatment
  • New plantings

Trees and shrubs give a landscape its structure, and they take years to replace. Careful pruning, shaping, and regular health checks keep them vibrant, safe, and in proportion with your home and garden.

Pruning and shaping

Good pruning is as much about timing as technique. Most deciduous trees and shrubs are best pruned in late winter while dormant, spring-flowering shrubs like lilac and forsythia right after they bloom, and oaks only outside of April through July to reduce the risk of oak wilt.

We remove dead, damaged, crossing, and crowded branches to improve health and airflow while keeping each plant's natural form.

Health assessments and disease treatment

A health assessment looks for signs of stress, pests, and disease: dieback, leaf spots, cankers, or a canopy that thins out year after year. Catching problems early leaves you the most options, and we'll explain what we find and recommend next steps.

New plantings

When it's time to add or replace a tree or shrub, we help you choose a species suited to the spot, its light and soil, and its size at maturity, then plant it so it establishes well. Spring and fall are the best planting seasons in Chicago.

A note on parkway trees

Trees on the parkway, the strip between the sidewalk and the street, belong to the City of Chicago and are maintained by the city. Requests for those trees go through 311, so our work focuses on the trees and shrubs on your property.

Common Questions

Have a question we didn't cover? Call us at (773) 456-1537.

When is the best time to prune trees in Chicago?

For most trees, late winter during dormancy. Spring-flowering shrubs are best pruned right after they bloom, and oaks shouldn't be pruned from April through July because of oak wilt.

How can I tell if a tree is unhealthy?

Watch for dead branches, leaves that wilt or drop early, cracked or peeling bark, mushrooms at the base, or a canopy that gets thinner each year. If you notice any of these, a health assessment can help find the cause.

Can you plant new trees and shrubs?

Yes. New plantings are part of our tree and shrub care, and we'll recommend species that suit the space and Chicago's climate.
