Hardscaping & Patios

What's included

  • Paver patios & walkways
  • Retaining walls
  • Fire pits & outdoor kitchens
  • Decorative stone work

Hardscaping turns a yard into a place you actually use: a patio for dinner outside, a walkway that leads guests to the door, a fire pit for cool fall evenings. It's also the part of a landscape that takes the most punishment, especially in a city where the ground freezes and thaws many times each winter.

Built for freeze and thaw

Frost heave is what lifts and cracks poorly built patios and walks. The fix happens below the surface: excavating to the right depth, building and compacting a solid gravel base, and planning drainage so water moves away from the patio and your foundation instead of collecting underneath.

Patios, walkways, and retaining walls

Paver patios and walkways come in a wide range of colors, sizes, and textures, from classic brick looks to large modern slabs. Retaining walls level sloped yards, create raised planting beds, and can double as seating at the edge of a patio. Decorative stone work, such as natural stone steps, borders, and accents, ties the hardscape to the garden around it.

Fire pits and outdoor kitchens

A fire pit or outdoor kitchen makes the patio the center of the yard. We'll help you choose the size, materials, and location that work with your space and the way you like to entertain.

Planning before we dig

Underground utilities are always marked through 811 before excavation starts. Some projects, like taller retaining walls, can also require a permit or an engineer's input, so we cover those questions during planning rather than mid-project.

Common Questions

Have a question we didn't cover? Call us at (773) 456-1537.

When is the best time to build a patio in Chicago?

Most hardscaping is built between spring and late fall, after the ground thaws and before it freezes again. Planning over the winter is a good way to be ready to start early in the season.

Should I choose pavers or poured concrete?

Pavers are individual units, so they move with freeze-thaw cycles instead of cracking as one slab, and a damaged paver can be lifted and replaced. We'll compare options and costs with you during the consultation.

Can you plan a patio and plantings together?

Yes. Because we also design gardens, we can plan the patio and the planting around it at the same time so the whole space feels like one design.
